Fender Japan was born in the early 1980s by incorporating Japanese-made guitars. For a long time, it was affectionately known as “Fenjapa,” and after many twists and turns, Japanese-made Fenders are still loved all over the world today.
This is the “TES’61-70” Custom Esquire from the COLLECTORS SERIES, which debuted around 1984. It’s a choice that sets it apart from the regular line and is typical of the collector’s series.
body
The guitar weighs approximately 3.4kg. The custom Esquire-style body features double binding and is made of alder, finished in a deep tobacco brown sunburst (polyester paint). The body top and sides show signs of wear, including various dents, scratches, and buckle marks, giving it a vintage look. The strap pins have been replaced with locking type pins (receivers not included), and the bridge saddle has been replaced with a spiral type.
neck
The neck is made of maple with a rosewood fingerboard. While there are some minor scratches and dents on the back of the neck, it is in relatively good condition considering its age. The tuners function well with little variation in pitch. The nut has been replaced in the past, and the frets have been leveled and adjusted, resulting in good playability. The nut width is approximately 42.2mm. The neck features a sleek shape with a shallow C-shape, both in width and thickness.
[Electrical System]
The controls consist of [1 Volume / 1 Tone / 3-way selector switch]. The selector switch functions as [Preset Tone / Normal / Tone Bypass], and the versatility of the tone despite having only one pickup is one of the Esquire’s charms. The pickup is a red bobbin type, and is listed as “TL-Vintage (USA)” in the catalog. The pickup elevation has been replaced from a spring to a rubber tube. Consumable parts such as pots, switches, and output jacks have been proactively replaced and are in good working order. Because inch size is used, the control plate may have been replaced.
