Gibson Thunderbird (Ebony)

A modern, updated version of Thunderbird has arrived!

When the Gibson Thunderbird first appeared in 1963, there was no other bass guitar in the world as unique as it was. Designed by Ray Dietrich, the automotive body designer who also worked on the Gibson Firebird, its innovative, curvilinear, asymmetrical body design was groundbreaking and revolutionary at the time, and remains fresh and modern even today. Early Thunderbirds featured a nine-ply neck-through-body construction with mahogany “wings,” making it the first Gibson bass to utilize this design. Later, the Thunderbird was redesigned with a non-reverse body shape and a glued set neck. The Thunderbird was also the first Gibson bass model to feature a long-scale (34-inch) neck; previous Gibson basses had a shorter 30.5-inch scale length.

This instrument features a solid mahogany body with the original inverted S-shaped body design. The body retains the appearance of the original neck-through design with a raised central section, but the neck uses a set-neck and SlimTaper profile for enhanced playability, making it more comfortable and easier to handle than ever before. Furthermore, the Thunderbird Bass headstock adopts the popular non-reverse style, allowing for quick and intuitive tuning. Other modern updates include Hipshot Ultralite Mini Clover tuning machines for accurate tuning and improved balance, as well as a Hipshot Supertone bridge that provides perfect intonation and adjustable action height.

Like the bird-like mythical spirit from Native American cultures that gave the bass its name, the Thunderbird Bass delivers a powerful sound. This is thanks to its two EB Bass Humbucker pickups, which produce a deep bass tone with rich output and punchy low frequencies. Each pickup has its own independent volume control, allowing you to use them individually or blend them in your preferred ratio. Furthermore, a master tone control allows for even finer adjustments to the tone. And of course, the pickguard features the iconic Thunderbird logo.
